Facilities and Production. Green lumber to finished cabinetry.
Yorktowne is a fully integrated manufacturer of fine cabinetry. This means we start with green lumber and take it through to the finished product. We control all phases of the manufacturing process, ensuring the production of finely crafted, quality cabinets every step of the way.

The process begins in our Dimension Mill in Mifflinburg, PA. At that location, green lumber with a moisture content of 80% is placed in a pre-dryer and kiln to be dried to the desired moisture content of 6%. The lumber goes through a series of rough dimensioning processes -- then proceeds to the molders, which cut random widths and lengths down to finer sizes. Finally, all face frames, doors and drawer components are produced with state-of-the-art woodworking machinery.

Our plant in Red Lion, PA and our new plant in Danville, VA take over and concentrate on fine milling, assembly and finish operations. After all finishing processes are completed, the cabinets are carefully assembled, reviewed for quality assurance, cartoned and shipped.

History of Growth and Expansion
Our entire history is about working with wood. Operations began in 1908 in New York with the manufacture of wooden doors, window frames and sashes. The 1920’s saw the family-owned business begin to manufacture custom kitchen cabinets. Operations were moved to Pennsylvania in 1937. Colonial Products, as we were then known, survived World War II by winning a war contract to make footlockers for the U.S. Navy and medical corps equipment for military facilities around the world.

In the 1950’s, we pioneered the development of national distribution in the kitchen cabinet industry by manufacturing kitchens in quantity and holding them in inventory for future delivery. The 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s were decades of further expansion of our product line and facilities. In 1960 an institutional furniture line and, later, a library furniture line were introduced. In 1973, Colonial Products became Yorktowne, a Division of the Wickes Corporation. In 1978, the TRIO line was introduced featuring easy cabinet door changes on a singular cabinet box, with an innovative snap-in hinge. In 1980, Connect-ables ready-to-assemble cabinets were introduced. In 1982, Yorktowne introduced its top-of-the-line Signature Series Cabinetry.

The 1990’s were a decade of significant developments including the acquisition of Yorktowne by Elkay Manufacturing Company. All of our facilities were upgraded, enabling Yorktowne to produce a high-quality, semi-custom product more efficiently. Many multi-year process improvements were put in place throughout the company and will continue.

Today we proudly celebrate our 99th anniversary year as one of the nation’s largest producers of fine quality, semi-custom cabinetry, with distribution in markets east of the Mississippi River. Yorktowne Cabinetry bears the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturer’s Association certification label, which confirms compliance to the American National Standards Institute’s performance guidelines for cabinetry.
